Helping their citizens live long healthy lives is a priority of countries around the world and a challenge to most nations. Samoa, along with neighbouring islands, has a very high incidence of type 2 diabetes among its people and is looking for change.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) recently received praise from Samoa’s Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi, for their members’ healthy life-style. He asked for all of Samoa’s church leaders to help eliminate the devastating effects of this life-threatening condition.
The Latter-day Saints’ church organization is moving forward with a wide-reaching initiative to educate and motivate Church and community members in Samoa and other Pacific Island nations with helpful diabetes prevention initiatives. These include programs focusing on education, nutrition and exercise. Health screenings and food production methods will also be introduced.
