BYU Has Six Athletes Representing The United States In The Rio Olympics

Jared Ward– USA, Marathon; Taylor Sander– USA, Men’s Indoor Volleyball; Mike Wall- USA, Men’s Indoor Volleyball; Tatenda Tsumba- Zimbabwe, Men’s 200m; Casey Patterson– USA, Men’s Beach Volleyball; Giuseppe Vinci – USA, Consultant Coach: Beach Volleyball, are those atheletes who will represent the country in The Rio Olympics, as published by BYU

Jared Ward was on BYU’s Track and Field team from 2010-2014. Ward is now a Statistics professor at BYU. He will be representing the USA in the Olympic Marathon event.Event:

​Tatenda Tsumba will be representing his hometown Harare, Zimbabwe in the Rio Olympics. Tsumba is currently a sophomore at BYU, and recently ran the fifth best 200m time in BYU indoor history (21.16) at the Air Force Invitational.Events:

​Taylor Sander was a four-time AVCA All-American from BYU Volleyball from 2011-2014. In 2014 he was named the AVCA Player of the Year and led the nation in points per set (5.48), was No. 2 in the nation in kills per set (4.60) and No. 5 in aces per set (.50)

​Mike Wall played for BYU Men’s Volleyball from 1999-2002. He led the Cougars to two NCAA National Championships in 1999 and 2001. In 2001, Wall was named NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player. In 2013, Wall was named U.S. Men’s Assistant Coach. He will be coaching Team USA’s Men’s Volleyball team in the Rio Olympics. Events:

​California native, Casey Patterson, played for BYU’s Men’s Volleyball team in 1999 and served an LDS mission in Little Rock, Arkansas. He later returned to the team and played from 2002-2005. He and his teammate, Jake Gibb, were named USA Volleyball’s Beach Team of the Year for 2013 and AVP’s 2014 men’s Team of the Year. Patterson was also voted the 2013 Male Beach Volleyball Player of the Year in a public vote on the FIVB Facebook page
