An assistant professor at Brigham Young University's design department designed the controversial $100 gold coin that depicts Lady Liberty as a Black Woman.
A recent article by The New York Times states that the U.S Mint will release a commemorative gold coin in April that will feature Lady Liberty as a black woman, marking the first time that she has been depicted as anything other than white on the nation’s currency.
It will commemorate the 225th anniversary of the Mint’s coin production. The $100 gold coin includes the years 1792, when the U.S. Mint was founded, and 2017. And below her is the popular American slogan "In God We Trust."
According to The Salt Lake Tribune this will be his fifth coin design for the mint. His first was a gold coin released in 2008. He also designed a 2014 silver dollar honoring the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Justin posted a photo of his designed on Facebook, and he received a lot of praises, some saying:
Congratulations Justin and Phebe!!! I'm going to try my BEST to get my hands on one of these! This is my absolute favorite design and sculpt ever!!!! I really wish the mintage wasn't so limited so more people could enjoy it in hand. Frustrations with the extremely limited mintage aside... I love love love love love this!!!!!!
