The iconic statue of Brigham Young that welcomes visitors to the campus had been vandalized.
According to BYU police, the statue was vandalized between 2 am and 6 am on Monday. The word “racist” was written at the base of the statue with about a gallon of red paint left behind when the authorities arrived at the area.
The BYU maintenance crew quickly cleaned the paint from the statue and the red “X” sign on the granite sign.
“They had it cleaned off that morning,” said BYU Police Lt. Rich Christianson. “It was just spray paint and latex paint.”
According to the Deseret News, the authorities are now looking for the 2 suspects responsible for it. The church has not released a statement regarding the incident.
