LDSC Helped 80,000 Children & Mothers in Maternal and Newborn Initiative in 27 Countries

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, through its humanitarian arm, Latter-day Saints Charities, initiated the Maternal and Newborn Care to help children and mothers in 27 countries and territories.

According to theIR annual report, they helped more than 80,000 children and mothers in 2019 alone.

It estimated that more than 800 mothers die every day from pregnancy or childhood complications, most of which are preventable. The Church provided help and training to midwives in order to increase the chances of survival for these mothers.

“With the right training and practice for medical providers, these mothers should not be dying,” says Matt Gardner, Latter-day Saint Charities Maternal and Newborn Care manager.

LDSC formed a partnership with Jhpiego’s Helping Mothers Survive program to make this project a reality. Through the combined efforts of both organizations, LDSC supported nurses and midwives in countries like Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Rwanda in providing the best possible medical care for women and newborns.
