The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced that Dieter F. Uchtdorf will serve as Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. The appointment follows the passing of President Jeffrey R. Holland on December 27, 2025, and was formalized by Church President Dallin H. Oaks on January 8, 2026.
As Acting President, President Uchtdorf will guide the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the Church’s second-highest governing body, under the direction of the First Presidency. The Quorum continues to play a central role in Church administration, providing leadership for congregations worldwide and serving as special witnesses of Jesus Christ.
This assignment follows Church tradition, which designates the senior apostle by ordination date as the quorum president. Since President Henry B. Eyring currently serves as First Counselor in the First Presidency, President Uchtdorf will fulfill the responsibilities of Acting President. He has served as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles since 2004 and has held leadership roles including service in area presidencies and the Presidency of the Seventy.
President Uchtdorf’s leadership ensures continuity in the governance of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and supports the ongoing mission of the Church globally.
