The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sent a letter to church leaders informing them that the Houston Texas Temple will be temporarily close due to the damage of Hurricane Harvey. The temple has not been used since the hurricane made a landfall in the state. The church released the following statement:
Due to flood damage sustained during Hurricane Harvey, the Houston Texas Temple is now closed to complete necessary renovations and repairs. It is anticipated that the renovation project will be completed in the spring.
The church also confirmed that the ensuing rains breached the temple beginning August 26 and flooded the temple annex building, the temple basement and the main floor, with water rising to more than a foot. The second floor was not flooded or damaged.
