ST. GEORGE, Utah — A 22-year-old student at Utah Tech University died Sunday evening after falling from a campus balcony, officials confirmed.
Emergency crews from the St. George Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to reports of the fall. The student was transported to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries, according to Fire Chief Robert Stoker. The incident remains under investigation by the Utah Tech University Police Department.
University officials expressed grief over the loss, calling it a tragedy for the campus community. “Utah Tech University is devastated by the loss of a member of our Utah Tech family,” said Jyl Hall, the university’s director of public relations. “His presence will be deeply missed on campus.”
The student, identified in a message to classmates as a freshman majoring in art, had only recently begun his studies.
In the wake of the tragedy, the university has made counseling resources available to students, faculty, and staff, including support from the Booth Wellness Center, the SafeUT app, and the national 988 suicide prevention lifeline. “We are thinking of the family and friends and will continue to support one another as we grieve together during this difficult time,” the university’s statement read.
The death has cast a shadow over the beginning of the fall semester, as students and faculty navigate both shock and sorrow.
