A Christian church in Sydney’s western suburbs was damaged by fire in the early hours of Monday morning. The Hebersham Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a statement confirming that the Hebersham chapel caught fire around 2:30 a.m.
According to the statement, the cause of the fire is still under investigation, though preliminary indications point toward possible electrical issues. Church leaders emphasized that the premises should not be entered due to ongoing safety hazards and the ongoing investigation.
“Dear Brothers and Sisters, it is with a heavy heart that we share with you that our beloved Hebersham chapel caught on fire early this morning,” the statement read. “The cause is still being investigated, but they’re leaning more towards electrical issues. We will update you as soon as we receive the final report. Please do not enter the premises right now due to ongoing investigations and safety hazards.”
Authorities responded quickly to the scene, and no injuries have been reported. Church leaders expressed gratitude for the swift response from local fire services and assured members that updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
The fire represents a significant loss for the local faith community, which uses the chapel for worship, educational programs, and community gatherings. Plans for recovery and rebuilding are expected to follow once safety assessments and investigations are complete.
