Carrie Elizabeth Romney, the sister-in-law of former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Mitt Romney, was found dead Friday evening near a shopping center in Valencia, California, officials confirmed.
The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office said Romney, 64, was discovered near a parking garage close to the Valencia Town Center, a popular retail destination north of Los Angeles. Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 8:30 p.m., but she was pronounced dead shortly after.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the inquiry remains ongoing.
Mitt Romney, who retired from the Senate earlier this year, has not publicly commented on the loss. Carrie Romney was married to one of the senator’s brothers and was well-known among friends and family for her warmth and community involvement.
Further details are expected to be released as the investigation continues.
