Police are continuing to investigate a brutal assault on an American missionary in French Polynesia after the 18-year-old was struck with a rock and pushed from a third-story balcony onto concrete. The victim, Elder Wesley Valgardson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has been hailed as a “miracle” survivor after the near-fatal attack left him severely injured.
The assault occurred around 1:00 a.m. on November 17 in the Pamatai neighborhood. According to his father, Eric Valgardson, the missionary heard glass breaking outside his apartment, and when he opened the door, he was immediately hit in the head, rendering him unconscious. The assailant then threw him over the railing.
Despite landing three stories below, Valgardson survived without any broken bones, though he sustained a severe concussion, a foot laceration, and significant back pain. Neighbors rushed to his aid and called an ambulance.
The Valgardson family traveled to Tahiti and has now brought their son home to the United States for ongoing medical care and support. His father stated that it is “truly a miracle” they have him with them today.
Authorities have not yet identified a suspect or clarified the motive, which could be anything from a targeted anti-religious attack to a crime fueled by substance abuse, a concern raised by local residents online. The investigation continues as the community grapples with the shock of the violence against a missionary widely respected for his peaceful service.
