Elder Clark G. Gilbert, recently sustained as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, shared reflections on the enduring influence of his early missionary service in Japan and how those experiences shaped his life and ministry.

In 1989, at age 19, Elder Gilbert was called to serve as a full-time missionary in the Kobe Japan Mission. A future mission leader recalled receiving a call from Gilbert soon after the assignments were announced. Gilbert introduced himself and expressed a desire to meet and serve alongside his fellow missionaries. That brief encounter left a lasting impression, with the senior missionary noting that Gilbert “would one day serve in significant Church leadership.”

During his mission, Elder Gilbert became known for his humility, devotion, and genuine care for others. His mission leaders and companions described him as passionate, cheerful, and respectful, showing sincere love for those he served, whether fellow missionaries, Church members, or investigators. Those who knew him at the time recall a young man of integrity and authenticity, whose dedication to the Lord and service to others reflected his deep spiritual foundation.

Elder Gilbert credits these formative experiences, along with consistent study and devotion, for preparing him for later opportunities in education and leadership. His academic path led him to Brigham Young University, Stanford University, and Harvard University, and he emphasizes that the lessons of faith, diligence, and reliance on the Lord during his mission were central to his personal and professional development.

Together with his wife, Christine, Elder Gilbert encourages members to trust in the Lord’s guidance: “Christ always leads you to something better. If you follow Him, you will find greater joy and happiness. And when the Savior asks what is required, it is never a burden but a blessing.”

Now serving as an apostle, Elder Gilbert continues to emphasize discipleship, service, and education as spiritual responsibilities. He encourages members to invite the Lord into learning and daily life, trusting that He will direct their efforts and strengthen their testimony. He also acknowledged the challenges facing the world today, describing an era of “confusion and division,” yet affirming that these times highlight the need for the gospel and provide opportunities to share its light.

Elder Gilbert expressed deep gratitude for his experiences in Japan and for the people who helped him grow. “The new environment, culture, and language challenged me and helped me become a better disciple of Jesus Christ,” he said. He prays that his testimony, strengthened in Japan, will reach “more ears to hear, more eyes to see, and more hearts to receive the gospel.”

As a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Gilbert now joins his fellow apostles in bearing witness of the living Christ. “We testify as apostles of Jesus Christ, who is the living Son of God. He is the light, life, and hope of the world. His teachings lead to happiness in this life and eternal life in the world to come. We are grateful to Heavenly Father for the incomparable gift of His Son,” he said.
