The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is preparing for what is expected to be one of the largest public events in Salt Lake City’s history: the 2027 open house of the historic Salt Lake Temple. To manage the anticipated crowds, the church will launch a mobile app in late August or early September 2026 that allows visitors to book tour times, according to Marty Stephens, director of government, community and interfaith relations for the church.
The app will streamline access for millions of visitors over the six-month event, while transportation plans are already underway. Ticket holders will be able to travel downtown using TRAX, Frontrunner, and local bus services provided by UTA, and the church will lease a secure, lighted park-and-ride lot at South Temple and Redwood Road, offering regular shuttle service to Temple Square. Church employees will also receive complimentary transit passes to help ease downtown congestion.
Tours will begin at the church’s Conference Center just north of Temple Square, moving underground to the temple itself, and are expected to last 60 to 80 minutes. Special missionaries will serve as docents to guide visitors through the experience. Once inside the perimeter, guests will have access not only to the temple but also to Temple Square, including newly installed statues and other church buildings. Stephens described the event as “a remarkable, memorable event for anyone who chooses to come,” with the full visit expected to take several hours.
The Salt Lake Temple open house follows years of extensive renovation and seismic upgrades, marking a rare opportunity for the public to see inside the iconic structure before its formal dedication. Church and city leaders are coordinating closely to ensure a smooth and safe experience, balancing visitor demand with transportation and crowd-management considerations.
