The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has updated its general handbook to clarify how temple ordinances and recommends apply to transgender members. According to the guidance, temple ordinances are received according to a person’s biological sex at birth. Worthy members who do not pursue surgical, medical, or social transition away from their birth sex remain eligible for temple recommends and ordinances.
For members who have transitioned but later return to their biological sex at birth, the handbook allows them to receive temple ordinances, provided they are worthy and committed to keeping God’s commandments. Bishops and stake presidents are encouraged to counsel members with sensitivity and Christlike love, taking individual circumstances into account. Stake and mission presidents are advised to seek guidance from the Area Presidency when questions arise.
The update does not change church doctrine but provides more detailed instructions on eligibility for temple participation. While transgender members can continue to attend regular worship services, access to temple rites is now specifically tied to biological sex at birth. The policy reflects the church’s broader approach to LGBTQ+ members: welcoming participation in congregational life while restricting certain sacred ordinances.
Church leaders emphasize that the guidance is intended to balance adherence to doctrine with compassion, encouraging local leaders to work closely with members facing gender-identity questions. The handbook outlines both eligibility and support to ensure members are treated with respect and understanding.
