Animated Biblical musical David now streaming after successful theatrical run

David, the animated biblical musical from Utah–based Angel Studios, is now available to stream following a strong performance in theaters. Phil Cunningham and co-executive producer Jaqui Cunningham announced, with a demo video, that Sunrise Animation Studios would produce Angel Studios‘ first animated musical film about the life of David based on the Book of Samuel found in the Old Testament. The film debuted in cinemas in December 2025 and went on to gross approximately $83 million worldwide, marking a major milestone for faith-based animated features.

Based on the Book of Samuel from the Old Testament, David chronicles the life of the young shepherd who rises from obscurity to become the future king of Israel. The story follows David’s anointing by the prophet Samuel, his victory over the Philistine giant Goliath, and his complicated relationship with King Saul, whose growing jealousy forces David into exile. Through musical numbers and large-scale animation, the film emphasizes themes of faith, courage, mercy, and devotion to God.

The project was conceived by writer and director Phil Cunningham, who has said the idea was inspired by his childhood in Africa, where he read the story of David in the Bible. Cunningham has cited Acts 13:22—“I have found in David, son of Jesse, a man after my own heart”—as a guiding verse for the film. Cunningham and Angel Studios co-founder Jordan Harmon have stated that their goal with David was to help revive animated biblical storytelling and make it accessible to audiences around the world.

David features a cast that includes Phil Wickham, Brandon Engman, Asim Chaudhry, Miri Mesika, Mick Wingert, Will de Renzy-Martin, and Lauren Daigle. The film blends original songs with cinematic action sequences, aiming to appeal to families while remaining rooted in scripture.

The film also gained attention during its development for its grassroots support. Actor and faith-based media advocate Kirk Cameron publicly endorsed the project, encouraging his followers to support Angel Studios and Sunrise Animation Studios through crowdfunding, which helped bring the film to completion.

Following its theatrical success and generally positive audience reception, David now makes its streaming debut as part of Angel Studios’ expanding slate of values-driven entertainment, extending its reach to global audiences seeking faith-centered animated storytelling.
