On a Sunday afternoon, Elder Patiole was walking along a street with his companion, Elder Timoteo, when they encountered five children trying to get home. As a car suddenly swerved toward them, Patiole acted instantly—pushing the children over a fence to safety and out of harm’s way. In doing so, he was struck by the vehicle and killed, giving his life to save theirs.

A week after the accident, the five children and their family were baptized by his companion, a moment many saw as part of the lasting impact of his sacrifice. News of his courage spread quickly, touching hearts both locally and abroad, and turning him into a symbol of Christlike love and selflessness.

Born in New Zealand to Samoan parents, Aaron was raised in Australia after his family moved there when he was just three months old. The fourth of six siblings, he was known for his joyful personality, sense of humor, and deep love for family—especially time spent with his nieces and nephews. He enjoyed rugby and basketball, supported the Wallabies and Liverpool Football Club, and showed strong creative talent through his artwork during his time at school.

Long before his mission, Aaron lived with a spirit of service and devotion. He attended church programs like Seminary and Institute, participated in pioneer treks, and worked for a year after finishing school to save money for his mission. Those who knew him said he already had the heart of a missionary well before he formally began serving.

In a touching coincidence, his mother had arrived in Samoa just days before the accident to visit relatives. The following week, she returned home with her son to lay him to rest at Cawdor Cemetery. His funeral, conducted by O. Vincent Haleck, drew more than a thousand mourners, reflecting the profound impact of his life.

Since then, his family has been surrounded by ongoing love and support from their community and church leaders. His mother visits his resting place daily, waiting for the sunset as a quiet moment of reflection and hope. She finds comfort in her faith, believing she will see her son again.

Among his belongings, the family discovered a saved testimony on his computer. In his own words, Aaron expressed his belief that despite differences, people can find unity, peace, and love through faith—words that now stand as a lasting reminder of the life he lived and the legacy he left behind.
