The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated nearly P1 million worth of classroom furniture and medical equipment to the municipality of Villaba, Leyte, as part of efforts to support local education and healthcare services.
The donation, turned over on September 14, included 720 classroom armchairs valued at nearly P700,000 and P236,500 worth of medical supplies and equipment for the municipality’s health services.
The medical donation included rapid dengue test kits, sphygmomanometers, stethoscopes, fetal dopplers, glucometers, glucometer strips and lancets.
Church representatives led by President Arnold Daradal of the Ormoc Philippines Stake formally turned over the items to municipal officials during a ceremony at Villaba South Central School. School heads representing seven campuses and local health workers also attended the event.
President Daradal explained that the Church seeks to serve both its members and the wider community.
“We tend to help not only [Church] members in the community but also the people in the community,” he said.
He also referenced Mosiah 2:17 in the Book of Mormon, which teaches that serving others is also service to God.
Villaba Vice Mayor Edgar Veloso received the donation on behalf of the municipality and expressed appreciation for the assistance.
“I would like to express my sincere appreciation for these generous contributions,” Veloso said. “This donation reflects your genuine concern for the welfare of the people of Villaba.”
The donation addresses identified needs in both the municipality’s schools and health services. According to the Church’s Philippines Newsroom, the Department of Education’s Leyte Division had identified Villaba as one of the communities dealing with worn and deteriorating classroom chairs.
The Villaba Municipal Health Office was also operating with limited resources, affecting its ability to provide health services to residents.
Through the donation, the Church provided new classroom seating for students while supplying local health workers with equipment used for basic medical testing, monitoring and patient care.
