More than 100 people gathered on the football field outside Holy Redeemer Church in Burton on Sunday, Sept. 28, for a vigil following a deadly shooting at a Grand Blanc Township church.
The vigil, organized by the Genesee County Republican Party, was originally scheduled to honor conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed on Sept. 10. However, speakers and attendees also addressed the recent tragedy at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township.
The shooting, which occurred at 4285 McCandlish Road, left four people dead and several others injured. Authorities said the suspected shooter, Thomas Jacob Sanford, drove his vehicle into the church and set it on fire before being killed by law enforcement. A heavy police presence was also reported in Burton as authorities searched Sanford’s home.

During the vigil, speakers offered prayers for victims, first responders, and the wider community. Michigan State Rep. Dave Martin said, “I pray for a blessing on our community and the horrific shadow of today’s tragedy.”
Attendees lit candles, listened to Christian music, and offered prayers. Jody Cramer reflected on the events, saying, “It wasn’t until I learned of the tragedies that occurred this afternoon that I realized the gravity and magnitude of the prayer that I was dedicated to. I’m praying for the police and the first responders.”
Anne DeLisle connected the vigil’s original purpose to the recent shooting, stating, “Whether they be like Charlie Kirk, who fearlessly proclaimed you around the world… or the families and members of the Grand Blanc stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, bless our land that we may all be able to worship as we understand you in peace.”
Pastor Christopher Thoma encouraged attendees to embrace compassion, saying, “It’s not too late to anyone who’s caught in hatred’s grip. You can turn. You can change.”
