Hindu leaders have welcomed the appointment of Dallin Harris Oaks, 93, as the 18th president and prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, following the passing of President Russell M. Nelson on September 27.

In a statement issued October 14, distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, expressed optimism about President Oaks’ leadership. Zed said he hoped that under Oaks’ stewardship, the Church would continue and expand its work in interfaith outreach, religious liberty, and collaboration with other faiths to promote “universal values and issues of common interest aimed at improving the human condition.”

Zed also emphasized the importance of ongoing humanitarian efforts, encouraging the Church to expand its relief and development projects worldwide — including disaster response, disease alleviation, self-reliance programs, and clean water initiatives.

President Oaks, who previously served as president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, is also known for his distinguished legal career, leadership within the Church, and his advocacy for religious freedom. He has been recognized with the Canterbury Medal for his “courage in the defense of religious liberty.”

Zed’s message concluded with hopes that President Oaks’ tenure would further strengthen ties between faith communities, promote tolerance, and foster mutual respect across religious traditions.
