Latter-day Saint chapel attacked during Sunday service; Several treated after chemical exposure

A Sunday morning gathering at a chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Dominican Republic turned tense on December 14, 2025, when an individual entered the building armed with a toy gun and a homemade chemical substance, authorities and church officials said.

The incident, which unfolded around 9:15 a.m. local time at the Santo Domingo Stake, ended without serious injuries, according to a statement released by the church. “All members, friends of the Church, and missionaries who were present are safe,” the statement said, expressing gratitude for the swift response of both church leaders and local authorities.

Church leaders said the individual’s weapon was a toy gun made to resemble a firearm, and the chemical substance posed only minor risk. Some attendees experienced mild effects from contact with the substance, and one person was transported to a medical facility for evaluation due to an emotional reaction. That individual is reported to be stable and out of danger.

Authorities have not released further details about the suspect, who was apprehended without injury. The church has emphasized that no one was seriously harmed and that normal activities at the chapel are expected to resume.
