The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has donated a newly constructed school building and sanitation facilities to Lycée Hangoumé in Togo, marking a significant improvement in learning conditions for students in the community.

The handover ceremony was held on April 17, 2026, and was attended by government officials, local leaders, education representatives, and members of the community. Among those present were Minister Delegate Gomado Kwame Gbloekpo, Mayor Anenou Ayikoe Martin of Lacs 4 Municipality, and Elder Alfred Kyungu, President of the Church’s Africa West Area. The event included cultural presentations and expressions of gratitude from local leaders and residents.

The project includes a modern building with four fully equipped classrooms, along with an administrative block containing a principal’s office and a teachers’ meeting room. Each classroom is furnished with desks and designed with proper ventilation to support a safe and comfortable learning environment.

In addition to the classrooms, the Church provided a borehole with a water tank and a sanitary block with eleven restroom units. The facilities include separate restrooms for girls, boys, male and female teachers, as well as a unit accessible to persons with disabilities, helping to improve hygiene and accessibility for the school community.

Before the construction of the new facilities, Lycée Hangoumé faced serious challenges, including overcrowded classrooms and a lack of proper sanitation. Some classes had more than 100 students in spaces designed for fewer than half that number. The absence of clean water and adequate toilets also contributed to health concerns and absenteeism among students.

With the new building in place, class sizes have been reduced to about 50 students, creating a more manageable and supportive learning environment. Access to clean water and proper sanitation is expected to significantly improve health conditions and restore dignity for both students and teachers.

Following the ceremony, the keys to the new facilities were symbolically handed over to government authorities, school administrators, and the local community, signifying that the people of Hangoumé are the primary beneficiaries of the project.

The donation reflects ongoing efforts to support education and community development in the region, providing infrastructure that will benefit current and future generations of students.
