Christian missionaries were among visitors at the Teotihuacán archaeological site in Mexico during a deadly shooting on Monday, April 20. All missionaries present during the incident are confirmed safe.
The attack occurred near the Pyramid of the Moon, a popular area within the UNESCO World Heritage site located northeast of Mexico City. Officials reported that a gunman opened fire on visitors, killing one person and injuring more than a dozen others before the situation came to an end following an exchange with responding security forces.
Panic spread quickly as tourists fled across the ancient complex, with some seeking shelter behind stone structures while others rushed to escape the area. Witnesses described scenes of confusion as visitors initially mistook the sound of gunfire for fireworks before realizing the severity of the situation.

According to reports, missionaries from a local Church group were present at the site as part of a routine preparation day activity. Social media updates from individuals familiar with the group confirmed that all missionaries were accounted for and unharmed following the incident.
Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the attack, while security measures at the site are being reviewed. Officials have stated that parts of the archaeological complex will remain restricted as the investigation continues, though the site is expected to reopen to visitors.
