A missionary has become the focus of an unexpected social media debate after photos and videos circulated showing him in casual attire—polo shirt untucked, jorts, shoes, and glasses—while holding what appeared to be commercial products. The images quickly drew attention online, with netizens questioning whether the outfit was appropriate, even on P-Day, a designated Preparation Day for missionaries. Many argued that the look resembled a vacation outfit rather than the professional appearance expected during church activities.
Elder Andaya responded to the controversy in a statement that was later translated into English: “Love you brothers and sisters, I’m sorry.” He clarified that the viral video had been edited and did not represent the full context of the situation. According to Elder Andaya, he and his companion were simply taking a casual photo during a P-Day activity, and they did not intend to endorse any products. He emphasized that missionaries do not have access to apps like Shopee, YouTube, or Facebook while serving, and that any suggestion of product promotion was a misunderstanding.
He further addressed a specific concern related to the viral clip’s appearance on social media. Elder Andaya explained that certain cuts in the video made the situation look different from reality, and reassured viewers that the images did not reflect the actual events. He also confirmed that he had already discussed the matter with his mission president and received guidance on the appropriate response.
“I’m sorry, brothers and sisters. May God bless,” Elder Andaya concluded, reiterating his regret over the misunderstanding and the unintended attention the images received online. The incident highlights the growing scrutiny that missionaries face on social media and the rapid spread of content that can easily be misinterpreted without proper context.
