A freight train collided with a public bus in Bangkok on Saturday, killing at least eight people and injuring dozens more, according to authorities. The crash occurred near Makkasan train station in the city centre and triggered a fire that engulfed the bus. Several nearby vehicles were also struck, prompting a large emergency response from firefighters and rescue crews. Officials said the fire has since been brought under control, with teams continuing to search the wreckage and cool the area.
Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat said initial reports suggest the bus was stopped on the tracks in heavy traffic, which may have prevented safety barriers from closing. The freight train, which was carrying containers, was unable to stop in time before the collision. Authorities have said the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Emergency responders worked to pull survivors from the wreckage as smoke and flames spread across the scene. Nearby roads were temporarily affected as rescue operations and firefighting efforts continued. Officials have not yet released full details on the identities of the victims.
Transport authorities say they will review safety procedures at the crossing following the incident. Investigators are expected to examine signal systems, barrier operation, and traffic conditions at the time of the crash.
