President Russell M. Nelson Dies at 101; Led Global Expansion of Latter-day Saint Faith

Russell M. Nelson, the 17th President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑day Saints and the oldest person ever to lead the Church, died peacefully at his home in Salt Lake City shortly after 10 p.m. MDT today. He was 101 years old.

President Nelson’s service as a prophet and global church leader began when he was sustained as President on January 14, 2018, succeeding Thomas S. Monson. He first entered full‑time Church leadership when he was called as an Apostle on April 7, 1984. During his presidential tenure, he traveled to over 30 nations and launched the construction of 200 new temples, emphasizing a renewed focus on ministering in the name of Jesus Christ.

Church leaders and members around the world have begun issuing tributes to his life, character, and spiritual legacy, and plans are already underway for memorial services and the orderly transition of leadership in accordance with Church procedure.
