A shooting at a Latter-day Saint meetinghouse in Salt Lake City on Wednesday evening left two people dead and at least six others wounded, authorities said, marking a rare but devastating act of violence in the tightly knit religious community.

Police responded to reports of gunfire around 7:30 p.m. at the church on 660 North Redwood Road, where a funeral service was underway inside. The incident occurred in the parking lot, authorities said, and three victims were listed in critical condition, while three others sustained injuries of undetermined severity after being taken to hospitals by private parties.

“Emergency responders from multiple agencies are on scene, and the area is being secured,” said Salt Lake City police spokesperson Glen Mills. Redwood Road was closed between 500 North and 700 North as law enforcement investigated.

Authorities have not yet identified a suspect or suspects. Surveillance footage captured a vehicle believed to be connected to the shooting, and police said they are following multiple leads. It is currently unknown whether more than one person was involved in the attack.

The violence has left the local community reeling. Members of the church expressed shock and grief, noting the rarity of such incidents at houses of worship in Salt Lake City. “This is a place where people come to mourn, to find peace,” one congregant said. “We never imagined something like this could happen here.”

This shooting comes amid heightened concerns nationwide about security at religious institutions. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has recently emphasized safety at its meetinghouses, urging local leaders to review security measures.

Authorities are continuing their investigation and have asked anyone with information to come forward. The scene remains active as officers collect evidence and interview witnesses.

This is a developing story.
