Worshippers put their lives on the line to protect children as gunfire broke out during a Sunday morning service at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Michigan, officials said.
“They were shielding the children who were also present within the church, moving them to safety,” he said. “Just hundreds of people just practicing their faith. Just extreme courage.”
Police responded within seconds of the first 911 call. Officers arrived at the church within 30 seconds, and within eight minutes, the suspected gunman was “neutralized” in the back parking lot by a Department of Natural Resources officer and a Grand Blanc Township officer, Renye said.
No further details were immediately released about the shooter or the victims. Authorities said the swift actions of worshippers and law enforcement likely prevented a greater tragedy.
